The eight acres of farmland at Westminster High, the largest remaining public school farm in Orange County, is at the heart of an initiative to grow fresh produce for the food bank to give to those who rely on the bounty of others in times of need.

The food bank, run by Community Action Partnership out of a huge warehouse in Garden Grove, serves thousands of people through a distribution network of 375 partners that include houses of worship, soup kitchens, food pantries, senior centers and family resource centers. The popularity of fresh food has grown in recent years, now accounting for about half of what the food bank provides. Most of it is purchased from farms in Central California.

The Grand Opening of “The Giving Farm” was held at Westminster High School on October 29, 2017. The Giving Farm is a farm-to-food bank collaborative community program, managed by Solutions for Urban Agriculture, the Orange County Food Bank, OC Farm Bureau and the Westminster High School Agriculture Program. It utilizes student and community volunteer support and provides hands-on educational opportunities while helping provide the community with fresh and nutritious fruits and vegetables.

Over a two-day period, the Giving Farm at Westminster High that provides fresh vegetables and fruit to Orange County Food Bank got some tender, loving care from more than 300 volunteers out of the corporate world.

The helping hands that spruced up the farm on May 18 and 19 were culled from the Corporate Volunteer Council of Orange County, which is focusing its efforts this year on alleviating food insecurity.
